Glossary of Terms

Important:

  • The following descriptions are based on prescribed definitions set forth in the Visa Merchant Data Standards Manual. The Manual is used by Visa transaction-acquiring banks to assign a specific number, i.e., the Merchant Category Code (MCC), for each merchant category.
  • In identifying whether merchants are classified as Department Stores, Dining Establishments, etc., EastWest shall be bound by the MCCs assigned by the acquiring bank.
  • Validity of examples cited is subject to the correct assignment of MCCs by the acquiring bank

Merchant Category

Description

Department Stores

Department stores are defined as all establishments with MCCs 5311.

These are merchants which sell a general line of apparel, home furnishings, furniture, electronics, cosmetics, housewares and major household appliances. Physical stores are sectioned into departments that usually have their own separate checkout counters while items in online stores may be filtered by category.

This category does not include stand-alone apparel, home furnishing, furniture, electronics, cosmetics, houseware and appliance stores, whether physical or online.

Examples of leading department stores in the Philippines are The SM Store, Rustan’s Department Store, The Landmark, Robinsons Department Store, ShopSM, Trunc.ph, etc.

Dining Establishments

Dining establishments are defined as all establishments MCCs 5812, 5813, or 5814.

These are merchants that fall under the following descriptions:

  • Eating places/restaurants that prepare food and beverage for immediate consumption, typically within the merchant’s premises. These merchants may provide table service by a waitstaff.

Examples in the Philippines are Sentro 1771,Manam Café, etc.

  • Bars, pubs, lounges, clubs that offer alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, ale, cocktails and other spirits and beverages for consumption within the premises

Examples in the Philippines are Gerry’s Grill, Dr. Wine Manila, Barcino, etc.

  • Fast food restaurants that offer food and beverages for immediate consumption within the premises or packaged for take-out

Examples in the Philippines are Army Navy, Jollibee, Bon Chon, etc.

  • Food delivery apps that offer food and beverages and deliver them door-to-door

Examples in the Philippines are Grabfood, foodpanda, PICK.A.ROO, etc.

Online Stores

Online stores typically use the B2B2C or business-to-business-to-consumer model which is a combination of B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) models. In this e-commerce structure, a business sells its products through another business or platform.

Travel Establishments

This category includes all travel-related merchants such as airlines, hotels/resorts for lodging or accommodation, travel services or travel agencies, vehicle rental and even fuel.

Examples of leading travel-related establishments in the Philippines are Philippine Airlines, Crimson hotels, Reli Tours and Travel Agency, Avis car rental, Petron, etc.

Utilities

Utility companies are defined as all establishments with MCCs 4814, 4899 or 4900.

This category includes all auto-charge billers that you have enrolled directly with a utility company as well as utilities that you have enrolled in the Quick Bills facility.

Examples of leading utility companies in the Philippines are Meralco, Globe, Skycable, Manila Water Company, etc.
